Setting a Plan in Motion Reduces Claims Frequency by 30%

Before becoming a client of United Heartland, American Baptist Homes of the Midwest (ABHM), a multi-faceted, multi-state operation, had more than 100 claims each year with an experience modification factor of 1.62.

Together, UH and ABHM committed to providing a safer work environment by focusing on reducing claims costs and hazards associated with the organization’s two major loss drivers: safe patient handling and slips/trips/falls. Efforts began with the development of comprehensive policies and procedures, followed by:

  • UH/ABHM collaborative Safety Work Plan
  • SPHM objective criteria development
  • SPHM gap analysis and employee observations
  • Facility tours

Location-specific safety committees and corporate risk management steering committees were also created to set direction for the organization by focusing on loss driver open claims and claims management.

Through these efforts, ABHM began to see a decline in claims while the accuracy of incident reporting increased. From the 2014 policy period to the 2017 policy period, their claim count dropped from 91 to 63 and their total incurred losses fell by 57%. For the upcoming policy year, their current mod is 0.77.

On a regular basis, the team reviews their programs for effectiveness. They also develop new resources to keep moving the organization in the desired direction.
