School District Finds Safety Solutions Through Forum Theatre

United Heartland works passionately to help education customers promote school safety and eliminate injuries. Our loss control team focuses on the unique needs of each school to help create customized safety programs. This approach recently led to an innovative safety exercise for a school district in Kansas.

Forum Theatre
When Auburn-Washburn Unified School District (USD) 437 and United Heartland Loss Control began discussions about behavior management challenges, they turned to the concept of forum theatre to uncover practical solutions.

Forum theatre is the exercise of acting out hypothetical situations through assigned roles to bring solutions to life. The process examines the perspectives and responsibilities of each role player, promoting new ways of thinking and fresh ideas.

USD 437’s United Heartland loss control consultant was invited to facilitate forum theatre small groups at a district conference. Teachers, paraprofessionals and other district employees in the session acted out potential school scenarios, playing the roles of students, teachers, administration and paraprofessionals to find protocol that would reduce or correct disruptive and threatening environments. It was a tremendous way to identify behavior management risks and find realistic solutions.

“Tools for Schools” Resource
Forum theatre is just one small example of the many ways United Heartland works with our education customers to keep safety top of mind throughout the school year. Use of “Tools for Schools” – a packet of safety and health resources for K-12 public and private school district employees – is another. “Tools for Schools” is available exclusively to United Heartland customers and offers guidance on a variety of issues and safety risks unique to school district employees and administrators.
